Adulteration as a Central Concern

In the discussion of ambergris, the author notes that the commercial article is “often nothing but an artificial mixture of benzoin, olibanum, wax, and flour, perfumed with musk.” Detection methods are given: pure ambergris melts without bubbles, is easily punctured with a heated needle, and has a rugged surface—a smooth surface indicates factitious material. Similarly, spurious castor sacs are “prepared by drying a mixture of castor, resin, dragons' blood, etc., in the scrotum of goats.” The preface states bluntly that the manufacturer must contend with “gross and universal adulteration of raw materials.” This forensic attention to purity shapes the entire work.
The Ambiguous Role of Ambergris
Ambergris receives a detailed, almost clinical description: it is a fatty, waxy substance found floating on the sea or in the cæcum of sperm whales, with a specific gravity of 0.8 to 0.9. It melts at boiling water temperature and volatilizes as white vapor. Yet the author notes that in perfumery, ambergris is “not so much used on account of its agreeable odor, but rather to make the perfumes more constant.” This functional role—as a fixative rather than a primary scent—contrasts with its exotic origin and high price. The text also describes its principal constituent, ambrin, a non-saponifiable fat that crystallizes in “verrucose, whitish or lustrous acicular crystals.”
Chemistry’s Promise and Limits
The chapter on artificial perfume-materials expresses cautious optimism: “There can be no doubt that when the chemical construction of volatile oils is better known, chemistry will succeed in preparing still more such combinations.” An example is given of Bouchardat and Lafont converting oil of turpentine into oil of lemons by rectifying at 311° to 314.6° F., then treating with glacial acetic acid and chromic acid. Yet the text does not claim that artificial materials have replaced natural ones; rather, it presents them as emerging possibilities. The tone is that of a practical chemist reporting on laboratory successes while acknowledging that much remains unknown.
Readers should approach this treatise as a period-specific technical document, not a modern formulary. The emphasis on detecting adulteration and the detailed physical descriptions of raw materials reflect a marketplace where fraud was rampant. The collaborative authorship and translator’s additions indicate a work built from multiple expert voices.
